This book takes you back to the days of the Roman invasion of England and how Queen Boadicea over came their mighty armies with the help of a twentieth century character sent back in time. A very interesting read?
The elevator speech for Queen of Iron Years is extremely short "A transgender man travels back in time to help Boadicea." Such a short precis is bound to be followed by an awkward silence, into which one could add, "The protagonist, Cean (Sean), leaves a dystopic near-future United States where a disease that uses transgendered people as vectors is creating a response like the worst of the AIDS crisis. He uses the time machine a friend's invented to try to help create a better future, one in which the Romans don't crush the rule of the Celtic queen. He does this knowing he may never return--or if he does, that he'll not see the branching alternate future he tried to create."
The descriptions of ancient Britain and its inhabitants are deeply evocative, by far the best part of the book. The horse-loving Iceni people, the Druid advisor and the Roman occupiers are made real as Cean does his best to fit in and to influence the queen. The "present" from which Cean came is told in briefer flashback sections that describe the increasingly intolerable and dangerous conditions for people like him. The Queen of Iron Years is a very satisfying alternate-history-fantasy.
The book was better than I thought it would be. In fact, it was much better than I thought it would be. I didn't want it to end when it did or the way it did. I would have been interested in a sequel.
